Our winemaking team works with a family of growers to source a diverse variety of grapes from premier vineyards throughout California. The resulting wines are interesting blends of distinct quality and character
Earthy aromas open up into cocoa, blackberry, cedar, and anise. The entry is smooth with flavors of cherry, chocolate, vanilla, and a mild toastiness. The finish is long with balanced acidity.
Thorn is sourced from acclaimed vineyard sites throughout the Napa Valley. The family of small vineyards offers vines of varying ages and regionality, lending to layers of character and complexity.
“I have watched many old vineyards and varieties be replanted to Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is about preserving Napa Valley Merlot.” —Jen Beloz, Winemaker
Merlot and Syrah
Lee Hudson has been farming in the Los Carneros Appellation since the early 1980’s. His enthusiasm for his land and all that it is capable of producing is infectious and unparalleled. While Hudson Vineyards is most well-known for Chardonnay, Lee has maintained a block of Merlot which we are fortunate to include in Thorn. This cool climate Merlot vineyard provides the backbone of aromas and dark fruit flavors.
The two benchmark vineyards of the Atlas Peak Appellation are Stagecoach Vineyards, owned and operated by Jan Krupp, and Antinori California, the California Estate owned by the Antinori Family. We are lucky enough to source Merlot from both world class sites. The gravelly, sometimes solid rock, mountain soils, and temperate high elevation growing conditions are the perfect combination for the smooth tannins and rich plum aromas found in Thorn.
Trefethen Family Vineyards
Owned and operated by John and Janet Trefethen, Trefethen Family Vineyards remains one of the few Napa Valley family wine estates. Located in the Oak Knoll District, the family has been farming their land since the late 1960’s. The Oak Knoll District is the sweet spot between the warmer upper valley appellations in Napa, and the cooler Los Carneros, creating a slightly longer growing season allowing the grapes to fully develop layers of flavor.
